Schermeister Winery Listed in “Best Experiences in the U.S. and Canada”
In December, prior to the statewide shutdown of outdoor dining and wine tasting, OpenTable, the global online restaurant reservation service, featured Schermeister Winery of Glen Ellen as one of the thirteen best experiences in the U.S. and Canada. The list recognizes establishments that are offering special culinary experiences to adapt to COVID-19.
Winemaker Rob Schermeister started his wine label in 2012. In 2018, he and his new wife Laura opened their tasting room in the Jack London Village space formerly occupied by Valley of the Moon Recording.
With indoor tasting shut down in Sonoma County in March of 2019, owners Rob and Laura Schermeister brought their tasting room outside with an upgraded patio in preparation for re-opening, including a planter box built by Rob, a fountain, and patio heaters for cooler weather.
In May of 2019, OpenTable reached out to the Schermeisters to invite them to be one of the first wineries on the platform. Rob and Laura agreed and learned the new system, which was one of the many pivots they made to their business plan in order to navigate COVID-19.
They also hired a local chef to prepare lunches, as seated dining was a requirement for wineries to operate. When meal requirements were later lifted, the winery added optional curated small bites to accompany their Viognier, Rosé, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Laura says, “The consistent feedback we’ve received from our guests on OpenTable was that they felt a genuine connection to us and our wines. While our wines are extraordinary, they don’t sell themselves. No product does. It starts with a human connection through conversation—with our native fermented wines being center stage. When our guests leave, they take with them not only great wine, but a feeling of the love we impart into every aspect of running our business passionately.”
While their tasting room and patio are closed, Schermeister Winery is offering virtual winemaker tastings, contactless curbside wine pickups, shipping, and free local delivery.
