Local author wins book award

“Where the World Begins: Sonoma Mountain Stories and Images,” published by Sonoma Mountain Preservation (SMP), has been awarded a Bronze Medal for West–Pacific Best Regional Nonfiction in the 2021 Independent Publishers Book Awards. Known as an IPPY, the award recognizes the excellence of the publication, which celebrates Sonoma Mountain in essays, personal stories, and pictures. Glen Ellen resident, author, and historical ecologist Arthur Dawson spearheaded the book project and wrote much of the content. The book features essays by Meg Beeler, local author and chair of the SMP board of directors; Sonoma-based writer and poet Rebecca Lawton; and Glen Ellen-based author and essayist Tracy Salcedo, with a foreword by environmental writer Kenneth Brower. Images were provided by local photographers Ed Cooper, Scott Hess, Ulrich Kolbe, and others. Copies of the award-winning local bestseller are available at Readers Books in downtown Sonoma, at the office of the Kenwood Press in downtown Glen Ellen, and online through the SMP website at
