Glen Ellen author Ed Davis and “The Last Professional”
“ The Last Professional,” an upcoming novel by Glen Ellen author Ed Davis, is already gaining national attention. Jerry Cimino, founder of San Francisco’s Beat Museum, says of the upcoming book: “With ‘ The Last Professional,’ Davis has done for American railroads what Kerouac did for American highways, and Steinbeck did for American Nomads.” An adventure about friendship, honor, and identity set among thundering freight trains and the vagabonds who ride them, The Last Professional will be released on Jan. 25, 2022, but is already available for pre-order through Readers’ Books. It was a bestseller on Bookstore.org for the week of Sept. 10.
Davis, who has lived in Sonoma Valley since the early 1970s, is also the author of the novella In All Things, a fictionalized account of his training year as a psychiatric technician at what was then called Sonoma State Hospital. Kirkus Reviews called that book “powerful, beautifully written, well-observed and effective.” His travel collection, Road Stories, details adventures from skid row to the Sierras, from an African hospital to ancient Incan ruins high in the Andes. His death row thriller, A Matter of Time, follows the last day of the hero’s life as it unfolds.
Davis’ work has appeared in Gris-Gris, New English Review, Potato Soup Journal, The Penmen Review, Rougarou, and The Umbrella Factory Magazine. A runner, backpacker, and master’s-level discus thrower, Davis and his wife Jan live in Glen Ellen, not far from Jack London’s Beauty Ranch.
