Diane Elizabeth Askew 1965 – 2021
Diane Elizabeth Askew passed away, peacefully, on December 23, 2021. She was preceded in death by her father, Barry Askew, and is survived by son Jon Parkman, Steve Smith, former husband Breck Parkman, mother Pamela Haralambous, sisters Lynda Meeks and Michelle Hindley, stepmother Loralee Denny, many relatives in Great Britain, and Rubix, her loyal German Shepard.
Diane was born in Newcastle, Great Britain on August 6th, 1965, and moved to Chicago as a young teenager with her family. Eventually settling in California, she graduated from Cal-Berkeley with a degree in Anthropology specializing in Mayan culture.
Breck introduced Diane to photography and she quickly proved to be a natural talent. Dedicating herself to her craft, she became a well-known photographer in the Bay Area, specializing in nature, landscape, documentary, and wedding photography.
She was devoted to her son Jon and was at her happiest going on adventures with him: hunting for treasures, doing art together, playing games and spending time with their dogs, hiking, camping, kayaking and whitewater rafting. She also taught him photography, and they spent countless hours together out at the Santa Rosa Heronry on West 9th Street, not just photographing the birds but also rescuing chicks that had fallen from their nests.
She volunteered her time and talents at Pets Lifeline, the Sonoma Valley Regional Park, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, the Robert Ferguson Observatory, and the Bird Rescue Center.
Her kind and gentle nature was unique, as was her wonderful sense of humor and warm smile; she is irreplaceable and we will never forget her.
