Cal Alumni Club to host speaker on college athletic recruitment

By Linda Williams

The Cal Alumni Club of Oakmont will be hosting their May dinner on Wednesday, May 18. The dinner will be held in the banquet rooms at the Valley of the Moon Club, 7025 Oakmont Dr.

Our speaker will be Dr. Kirsten Hextrum, an author of several books on college athletic recruitment. Hextrum is currently a Professor of Educational Leadership and Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Oklahoma. She will be speaking about Operation Varsity Blues, the largest college admission scandal in US history. The scandal involves how athletic recruitment ensures that white middle-class athletes have greater access to college admissions than lower-income communities of color.

The cost of the dinner is $45 for members of the Cal Alumni Club and $55 for non-members. Even if you are not a graduate of Cal, you can join the club for $20 per year per household as a “Friend of Cal.” Pre-dinner cocktails and appetizers will begin at 5 p.m. and are included in the price. The buffet dinner will include a choice of chicken piccata or tri-tip, along with roasted vegetables, roasted red potatoes, garden salad, kale and quinoa salad, and dinner rolls. Black Forest cake and lemon cake will be the dessert choices. There will also be wine on the tables.
