New mural honors Dunbar student and school community

New mural honors Dunbar student and school community
To celebrate the culmination of the first year of the Dunbar Strategic Arts Plan, or dunbART, students at Dunbar Elementary School in Glen Ellen, under the tutelage of Kimzin Creative, Flockworks, and local community artists, created a mural on an exterior wall of the school’s primary building, with the theme “Each One to Community.” The mural, one of many stunning works that decorate the country campus, both celebrates the Dunbar community and honors the memory of student Luis Colin, who tragically passed away, along with family members, in a car crash in 2021. Luis loved Matchbox cars, so the mural includes a small fleet driving down a winding rainbow highway. dunbART is a year-long arts plan serving the 183 transitional kindergarten through fifth-grade scholars at Dunbar, using art and music to help them develop educational and English language skills, build confidence as learners, and explore selfexpression. The program incorporates professional development opportunities for Dunbar staff and partner organizations, including visual and performing arts mentorship for two Dunbar teachers and access to free arts integrated curriculum, and will provide over 150 hours of free arts programming for the school.Photo by Paul Goguen
