Sugarloaf plans celebratory hikes and events

Fourth of July fireworks hike, intermediate hike, and Kids Creek Camp are planned

By Mia Epstein

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, a local favorite for scenic hikes, has two very exciting upcoming events planned, as well as a kids’ camp.

On July Fourth, there will be a hike to the top of the highest mountain in Sonoma Valley, Bald Mountain, to view fireworks. From this vantage point, 18 different fireworks displays are visible, making this an amazing opportunity for all fireworks lovers. The hike is 6.5 miles long and involved 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Be prepared with quality hiking boots and a good night’s rest. Snacks and sweets will be provided at the top. Tickets are available at sugarloafpark.org.

On July 9, the park will host an Intermediate Hiking for Fitness event, which is perfect for those who completed the Beginner Hiking for Fitness program or those who can hike three miles with elevation gains. This program occurs weekly and is a great opportunity for a scenic hike with gorgeous vistas. The goal is to increase difficulty each week, with an end goal of hiking to the summit of Bald Mountain. On July 11, one of four sessions of the park’s Creek Camp for youths will take place. A fun morning hike and an afternoon of water exploration, including learning about insects and amphibians, makes for an educational summer day for children ages 8 through 12. Kids will learn about wildlife and plants in the park while playing games, hiking, and storytelling. Sign up at sugarloafpark.org.
