The City of Santa Rosa began issuing and accepting nomination applications on Monday, July 18, for residents interested in running for City Council in Districts 2, 3, 4, and 6 in the November 2022 general election. Prospective candidates have until Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. to submit all necessary paperwork and proof of eligibility. District 2 includes parts of Bennett Valley and District 3 includes Oakmont.

The timeline is as follows: On July 18, the candidate nomination period opened. On Aug. 10, the 24-hour campaign finance reporting period opens; check the city website for details. The candidate nomination period closes at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12; all required documents must be completed and received by the City Clerk, and a postmark is not accepted. On Aug. 15, the extended candidate nomination filing period opens for non-incumbent candidates. Nov. 8 is when 24-hour campaign financing reporting closes.

To be eligible to run for Santa Rosa City Council, a prospective candidate must be a U.S. citizen, be 18 years of age or older on the date of the election, not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction, be a registered voter, and reside within the district in which they are running for office at the time nomination papers are issued. Any person can verify their voter registration information by visiting the Sonoma County Voter Identification website. If elected, the council members for Districts 2, 4, and 6 will start their next terms in December 2022 and are expected to serve through December 2026. The person elected for District 3 will be completing the term of a previously vacated seat and is expected to serve through December 2024.

Prospective candidates must obtain a nomination packet by visiting the City Clerk’s office at 100 Santa Rosa Ave. in Santa Rosa between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
