Two seats on the Board of Trustees for the Sonoma Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) will be on the ballot this coming November, including the seat from Trustee Area 1, which covers the Glen Ellen area.

Trustee Area 1 covers the north end of the district and includes Dunbar Elementary School and Altimira Middle School. Cathy Coleman has completed a four-year term as a trustee for the area and, according to press reports, will not be seeking reelection. As of press time, no one had publicly announced their candidacy.

Trustee Area 2, the other open seat, covers a good portion of the Springs, including Flowery Elementary School. Melanie Blake, former Dunbar principal, currently serves as trustee for the area and has also announced she will not seek reelection after her fouryear term expires. As of press time, two candidates have declared their interest in filling the vacant seat.

Nominations for candidates opened on July 18 and will close on Aug. 12. If no incumbent files, the nomination period closes Aug. 17. To quality as a candidate, you must live within the trustee area and be at least 18 years old. While candidates must reside in the trustee area for the seat they wish to fill, they are elected by all qualified voters in the district as part of the general election, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8.

More information on how to become a candidate is available on the SVUSD website, including maps of trustee areas and links to necessary forms. The SVUSD website is sonomaschools.org.
