Mexican Independence Day celebration set

Celebrate Grito de Dolores at Kina’s Kitchen and Bar on Sept. 16

By Nicole Abaté Ducarroz

Mexican independence from Spain was declared by a parish priest in the village of Dolores, Mexico, on Sept. 16, 1801. His Grito de Dolores was a cry for freedom that began an 11-year war of independence.

The week leading up to Friday, Sept. 16, is a time of celebration in Mexico that corresponds to the Fourth of July in the United States. “I have come to see Cinco de Mayo as the mistakenly highlighted day to celebrate Mexico and, as Mexican-Americans, we would like to correct that course,” Chavez said. “Bringing this celebration to life on Sept. 16 is one huge step in the right direction.”

The celebration of “El Grito” will be festive and delicious. “Bring your family to enjoy some great food and drinks, mariachi, and a long night of singing,” Chavez said You may ask, if Sept. 16 is Mexican Independence Day, what is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the first battle of Puebla, when an outnumbered, ill-equipped Mexican army managed to defeat the French army on May 5, 1862. Though the great victory promoted national unity and patriotism, Napoleon III wanted to establish a Mexican republic with a monarchy favorable to France, so he persevered. His troops defeated the Mexicans a year later at the second battle, or siege, of Puebla, captured Mexico City, and installed Emperor Maximilian I as ruler.

But Mexican guerrilla resistance, the threat of war with Prussia, and the prospect of a fight with the United States after the Civil War caused Napoleon III to retreat. The Mexicans took Puebla back in a third battle in 1867, and captured and executed Maximilian.
