Kenwood Community Church Welcomes New Interim Pastor

Kenwood Community Church would like to welcome and introduce our new Interim Pastor, Rev. Cornelia Cyss-Carter, Ph.D. Here, in her own words, are some highlights of her background: “On July 4th this year, I was part of the wild and wonderful Pancake Breakfast Crew at Kenwood Community Church. It was my fourth day on the job as interim pastor to the congregation, and I was trying to get my bearings. Fortunately, everyone was very kind and welcoming, even if I wasn’t always sure about people’s names and couldn’t figure out where to find more breakfast supplies! “On October 1, 2021, I had retired as pastor of Two Rock Valley and Tomales Presbyterian Churches, which are located in Sonoma and Marin Counties. After serving those two congregations for more than 15 years, I was ready to spend more time with my husband, Carl, to update our home in Petaluma, and to enjoy our children and grandchildren. But I was willing to do some preaching when needed, and did so at Kenwood Community Church on three Sundays in March. In May I was asked to apply to the interim pastor’s position, in June I was interviewed by the church’s search committee, and on July 1st I came out of retirement to join with the congregation. “What convinced me to step back into active ministry was the friendly urging by church leaders and the warm welcome by the entire congregation. And I am definitely enchanted by the venerable church building with so much history and so many special touches, and I love its beautiful location in the Sonoma Valley. I am also glad that this is a half-time pastor’s position, which leaves me plenty of time for family and for reading, gardening, and other hobbies.” Kenwood Community Church has been part of the surrounding village since 1888. Generations of Protestant Christians have worshipped God in its lovely sanctuary, following the Reformed tradition with its clear and simple liturgy and its emphasis on strong lay leadership. We worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m., and we hold special services on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunday. We have marvelous church music, led by an amazing organist / pianist, a fantastic flautist, and a professionally trained soprano. Occasionally, we offer special music concert on a Sunday afternoon; the next such event is coming up on December 18: a Happy Holiday Concert produced by Harold Julander, piano, and Kyle Craft, violin. The congregation of Kenwood Community Church seeks to serve neighbors in the immediate vicinity and in the larger Sonoma County area. We host a weekly quilting group for members of the church and the wider community; the Threshold Singers meet in the sanctuary twice a month; and our Women of the World group and our Magnificent Old Men each get together once a month. We also support various populations through our financial donations, focusing especially on helping women, children, and emancipated foster youth. Please join us for worship on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., in person or on Zoom. We will be delighted to welcome you and get to know you.
