Stubbins stepping down from Transcendence
Stubbins married Broadway actress Libby Servais, one of Transcendence’s performers, in August of last year, and they will be establishing their primary residence in New York City this spring, although they plan to be back in Sonoma throughout the coming years. Stubbins will remain on the Transcendence Board of Directors.
Co-Executive Director Brad Surosky will take on the full role of Executive Director, and Heather Montgomery will be the Director of Sales & Marketing.
Stubbins left the Broadway production of Mary Poppins in 2009 to help found Transcendence Theatre Company with Surosky and Amy Miller. In 2011, he moved full-time to Sonoma to co-produce Transcendence’s first performance at Jack London, and has co-lead the company to reaching over 200,000 patrons, contributing over $515,000 to the park, and growing the budget to over $4 million.
Stubbins is a charter member of the Sonoma Sunrise Rotary Club, served as a Super Ambassador of the Arts for Sonoma County Tourism’s CTA program, and was named one of North Bay Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” for his leadership at Transcendence.
“Sonoma is my favorite place on earth. I am forever grateful and forever humbled by the generosity and kindness of this community. We arrived in Sonoma in 2011 with such giant dreams, and to see them come true has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” said Stubbins.

I’m especially proud of the immense impact we’ve been able to make together in the community through our countless education, outreach, donated tickets, service projects, and kids programs.

Colleen’s Coffee Shop a local hangout
“I want to be a community space, offering home-style food and a homey place to be, where people can linger over coffee and talk with friends,” said proprietor Colleen Falconer.
Falconer believes in buying locally and serves local coffees, breads and as many ingredients as she can source here.
There’s organic coffee from Sunshine Organic Coffee Roasters in Forestville, a company that specializes in small batch roasting. She serves the traditional barista coffees – regular drip, latte, mocha, and espresso, as well as hot chocolate and a wide variety of teas.
The menu is simple and reasonable, featuring a range of healthy sandwiches, breakfasts, lunches, and always-fresh food. Falconer bakes most of her own breads, including croissants, bagels, muffins and makes fresh burritos, as well. What she doesn’t make herself comes from Costeaux French Bakery in Healdsburg and the Basque Boulangerie in Sonoma. She serves tri-tip, pulled pork, tuna and chicken breast, along with salads, smoothies and milk shakes.
And this is Sonoma, after all, so there is wine and beer, as well.
Prices are modest, with the most expensive item on the menu coming in at $13.99 for a steak salad with crumbled blue cheese. All the sandwiches are less than $10.
Falconer has spent most of her adult life in the hospitality industry, working as a waitress, then became a partner in a Healdsburg-based catering company for several years. She struck out on her own with a coffee shop in Bodega and has done well enough to branch out to Santa Rosa with the Skyhawk location.
Colleen operates the Skyhawk shop with her son, James. Daughter Jenifer runs the original Colleen’s Coffee Shop at 17175 Bodega Highway, in Bodega. She keeps the same hours as mom.
The café is homey, with an unusual division of a space that once housed a much larger restaurant. Family style tables offer friendly seating, while a large couch and two armchairs are close to a fireplace at the far end. There is a 150-gallon aquarium sporting fresh-water denizens that are more entertaining than any TV. Seasonal decorations adorn counters and serving areas.

It’s a mystery at DeerfieldDeerfield Ranch Winery in Kenwood is hosting a murder mystery in the cave on Feb. 8, 6:30 p.m.

New chef at TIPS Roadside
Calderon is replacing Thaddeus Palmer, who has been five years with TIPS and is now off to pursue a career in building custom furniture.
Palmer will continue to collaborate with TIPS on select special events, such as the monthly Crawfish Boil.
Calderon brings two decades of executive chef experience to TIPS.
Most recently he was Executive Chef with Five Dot Ranch at Napa’s Oxbow Market. He relocated his family from Southern California in 2016, having led kitchens at some of the hottest eateries in the Los Angeles metro area.
Early in his career he was also a chef and owner of his own gourmet taco truck in LA’s booming food truck market, experience that is immediately transferable to TIPS mobile catering business, the Tri-Tip Trolley.
“When I visited TIPS Roadside the first time, I immediately felt at home,” said Calderon. “Their menu was fantastic and right in line with what I love to cook and eat.”
Customers should expect to see little change to their menu favorites, including TIPS fried chicken, house-made tots and award winning beignets. In the coming months, Calderon will be putting his own stamp on the TIPS Roadside experience.

Glen Ellen businesses on the moveDon’t worry, the Garden Court Café in Glen Ellen isn’t closing for good at the end of February. Their entire building at 13647 Arnold Dr. is undergoing a major remodel beginning in March and lasting into the summer.
For Garden Court, when they return to business, you will see an expanded restaurant space, remodeled kitchen, new parking lot, and even a patio in the back of the building.
As for neighbor McCormick’s Mercantile, they have temporarily relocated just a stone’s throw away, in space next to the fig café.
While McCormick’s offerings will be a bit smaller, they will carry many of the favorite gift items that locals and visitors to Glen Ellen love, including hats, locally made jewelry, bath and home products, toys, greeting cards etc., said proprietor Sheryee McCormick. Also, they will be offering their new custom framing service in the temporary space.
Until construction starts, they will be selling furniture in the old space.
Hours for McCormick’s has changed a bit, now Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
