Weed management program for Calabazas Preserve

At its June 9 meeting, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved a contract for grazing services to reduce infestations of yellow star-thistle in the Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve in Glen Ellen.

Owned by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District (Ag + Open Space), the1,290-acre Calabazas Preserve was once part of Beltane Ranch.

In the past, Ag + Open Space has used hand-pulling, along with mechanical means and herbicide, to manage yellow star-thistle, an invasive species that propagates rapidly and adds to fire fuel loads.

After a request for proposals process, the county has entered into a $219,000 contract with SweetWater Grazing through December of 2022 for sheep grazing services.
