Art Amble

Sonoma Valley Museum of Art launches its “First Thursdays Sonoma Art Walk” on Sept. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m. September's featured artist is Loretta Loy-Adair, oil painter, and featured winemaker is Michael Adair, pouring Rancho San Miguel Old Vine Zinfandel. Other local artists will be showcasing their art at local businesses around Sonoma Plaza. Admission is free. Just show up and be ready to amble.

Crush - a multidimensional look at winemaking

Author John Briscoe will read from his book Crush at Readers' Books on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Briscoe gives a multidimensional look at the social, political, cultural, legal, and viticultural elements of the progress of California winemaking over several centuries, bringing vivid detail to the tale. A poet, author, and lawyer, Briscoe has published several books, including The Lost Poems of Cangjie, and Tadich Grill: The Story of San Francisco's Oldest Restaurant. He currently serves on the boards of three historical societies and other organizations.

Trashion fashion at library

Local artist Nora Russo will exhibit her paintings, sculptures and trashion fashion at the Sonoma Valley Library during the month of September, as a part of the library's 2018 artist series. A reception featuring Russo will be on Sept. 7, 4-6 p.m. Her work will be displayed in the library's forum room, open for viewing throughout the month. Russo's artwork is a mixture of color, texture and a sense of humor. Free and open to all.

Water Bark in the park

The Spring Lake Water Bark, a leash-free day for dogs to swim and romp on the sand, kicks off at the Spring Lake Swimming Lagoon on Sept. 8, with free treats and tennis balls for the first 300 dogs. In addition, new sponsor Stanley Steemer has provided 100 “rally towels” to help dry off dogs after their swim. Water Bark days are Sept. 8-9, 16, 22-23 and 29-30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fees are $5 per dog for Sonoma County Regional Parks' members and $7 per dog for non-members. Parking is free for members or $7 per vehicle for non-members.


Nature and Optics Festival

The annual Wine Country Nature and Optics Festival comes to the Sonoma Plaza on Sept. 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nature organizations representing fins, feathers, fauna, flora and flippers will be on hand to introduce the public to important conservation efforts. Major binocular and spotting scope companies will demo and sell a wide range of optics technology. In addition, nature artists, education birds of prey, and renowned photographers will also be on hand. The festival, sponsored by non-profit Sonoma Nature, is partnering with California State Parks and Sonoma and Petaluma Parks.

All about perennial vegetables

On Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m., The Master Gardener Program presents “Growing Perennial Vegetables and Small Fruits,” with Ann Chambers at the Sonoma Valley Library. Planting perennial vegetables and fruits in your garden will give you harvests for years. Perennial plants live for at least two seasons, and sometimes much longer. Perennials tend to be soft-wooded, different from a shrub or tree. Plant selection, how to prepare soil, and where to plant will be discussed at the workshop. The event is free and open to all.

Get political with SV dems

Sonoma Valley Democrats host a campaign kick off celebration at Westerbeke Ranch on Sept. 9, 5-7 p.m. Enjoy an evening in a lovely poolside setting with wine and appetizers. Meet local officials and support a community of local Democrats. Tickets are $20. Funds raised go to the operation of the Sonoma Valley Democrats Club, which is working with allies to win crucial “flippable” races in California congressional districts.

Theater classes for kids

Spreckels Performing Arts Center offers a series of kids' theater classes running Sept. 10-Nov. 5. Fairytale Magic, for ages 5-7, will teach kids singing basics and build up dramatic skills while acting out favorite stories. Drama Games, for ages 8-12, will build acting fundamentals through the art of play, with the goal of developing leadership and acting skills. Introduction to Costume, taught by Spreckels' resident costumer Pamela Jo Johnson, will introduce the basics of costume design. Classes cost $80-$120 (discounts for Rohnert Park residents).

Guy and Dolls, a winning gamble

The swinging jazz-age musical treat Guys and Dolls rolls into 6th Street Playhouse Sept. 14-Oct. 7, with a champagne toast on opening night. Packed with big, flashy numbers like “Luck Be a Lady,” and “Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,” James Newman directs, with music director Ginger Beavers and Broadway performer Joseph Favalora as choreographer. Appropriate for ages 10 and up. Evening shows at 7:30 p.m., weekend matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets: $22-35.

Folk-rock Farallons benefit concert

The Farallons are a Folk 'n Roll acoustic group with Irish, jazz, classical, country, and even Latin influences. Tom Richardson, Terry Mills and Linda Weber blend three-part harmonies with steel and nylon stringed acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin and flute, featuring original songs and covers. They will play a benefit concert for the Santa Rosa Arts Center on Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Chroma Gallery.

Mid-East Tapestry Ensemble

On Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. the Sonoma Valley Regional Library presents the Mid-East Tapestry Ensemble, playing a diverse array of classical, urban and folk music from Arabic-speaking countries as well as Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Persian traditions. The ensemble is comprised of the Kanoun, a 78-stringed Middle Eastern zither; the Oud, an 11-stringed lute; acoustic bass; and Arabic Tabla. Come hear music spanning thousands of years.

A feast fit for a Viking

Come one, come all on Sept. 15 to Freya Lodge's Sons of Norway Hall for a Viking Feast - four courses over two hours. Enjoy traditional foods of the past, beautiful music, and learn about traditional dress of the seventh to the ninth centuries, as well as the modern Bunads worn by Freya Lodge members. Doors open at 4 p.m., feast begins at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $28.

TV icon comedy night

Share a night with two TV icons at The Laugh Cellar's TV Icon Night Comedy Cabaret on Sept. 15 at the Flamingo Hotel. Featuring Priscilla Barnes “Terri” from Three's Company and Adrian Zmed “Officer Vince Romano” from TJ Hooker, plus a special guest, this will be a fun-filled night with a chance to meet these fabulous entertainers. Audience Q&A after the show. Come early and enjoy drinks and food on the Terrace Grill. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $28. 21+ show.
