Steven Klausner, former Glen Ellen resident and dove trainer

It is with great sadness that the family of Steven R. Klausner announces his departure from this earth shortly before his 67th birthday. Over the last five years he survived a traumatic brain injury, various hospitalizations and physical challenges, and the devastating Tubbs Fire that took his home and almost his life at Journey’s End Mobile Home Park in Santa Rosa. He was determined to carry on despite it all.

Steve was born to Stanley and Dorothy Klausner, the second of six children, in San Pedro, California. He was a feisty child who grew into a feisty teenager who questioned authority on topics ranging from high school dress codes to the war in Vietnam. After graduation from San Pedro High School, Steve set out on adventures all over the United States in a rainbow-painted bus loaded with other young people who shared similar views on the politics of the time. At the end of this adventure, he settled on five acres in Yakima, Washington, first living in a teepee, then a rustic cabin that he and friends built.

In 1978 Steve returned to California, settling in Sonoma County and purchasing a small house on two acres in Glen Ellen, beside Sonoma Creek. His love of nature and the need to preserve it blossomed here. Steve became very active in, and was instrumental in founding, Friends of Sonoma Creek, dedicated to preserving the creek environment and the native steelhead run. Steve was also known for his political stands, which didn’t follow party lines and went from liberal to conservative, depending on how he saw an issue. He participated in the Sonoma County Taxpayers Association, weighing in on accountability, and spoke at Santa Rosa City Council meetings as well. From the SMART train to the resort planned off Highway 12, you could count on an opinion.

Steve was employed at Hewlett Packard/Agilent for almost 25 years, until his position was moved overseas. After that he enrolled for job retraining at Santa Rosa Junior College, receiving his AA degree in Computer Science.

Steve’s home business was named Doves Aflight. He raised and trained white rock doves that he flew at weddings, funerals and special events, until his head injury in 2013. In his free time he loved to dance and play drums with a samba band. If there was a parade, you would find him there either playing his drums or releasing the birds. Steve loved his family and he will be missed.

He is survived by his son Quinton Klausner, two former wives, Jill Gerry and Deborah Coish, sisters Jean Ritter (Michael), Cheryl Eades (Ben), Viki Trani (Jim), Peggy Diaz (Dave), and brother Stan Klausner (Cyndi). He is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces who mourn his passing. His parents preceded him in death.

There will be no services, but friends are encouraged to seek out a special place in nature to reflect, and to donate to an environmental organization in his name.
