Supervisor Susan Gorin will run again

First District Supervisor seeking re-election in 2020

“While we’ve achieved a lot these last few years, there’s still more work to do around the Sonoma Development Center, recovering from the fires, shaping local advisory councils, and finding sustainable solutions to our jobs/housing imbalance,” Gorin said in her Feb. 25 announcement. “That’s why I’m running for re-election.”

The past four years have been loaded with major issues, including legalizing cannabis, housing shortages, bad roads, chronic financial shortages, and the 2017 wildfires that hit the First District hard, particularly in Kenwood and Glen Ellen. The Gorins lost their home in Oakmont to the conflagration, one of only two lost in the senior community.

Gorin already has the endorsements of State Senator Bill Dodd, Assembly member Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Sonoma Mayor Amy Harrington, and Santa Rosa Mayor Tom Schwedhelm.

While no one has challenged her so far, Gorin said that she is planning a “robust campaign with an updated online presence in the next few weeks, and a major fundraiser in the summer.”

Gorin first won election to the seat in 2012, leading a crowd of six candidates in June and defeating the second top vote-getter, John Sawyer, with 51.8 percent of the November vote.

Springs resident Gina Cuclis and Santa Rosa-based Keith Rhinehart both ran against Gorin in 2016, though neither garnered enough votes to send the election beyond the June primary.

“I have not decided one way or the other,” Rhinehart said about running in 2020, though he would not be surprised if a “big name” opponent came into the race.
