Modifications to water basin boundaries approved

In summer 2018, local jurisdictions requested modifications to the boundaries of all three Sonoma County groundwater basins. On Feb. 11, the California Department of Water Resources announced that all the Sonoma County requests had been approved. These boundaries define the areas that will be managed by local Groundwater Sustainability Plans after 2022, as mandated by California state law. The changes are as follows:

Petaluma Valley basin: The City of Petaluma requested that the basin boundary be extended to incorporate the majority of the city. This modification keeps Petaluma in one basin, instead of being split between Petaluma Valley and the Wilson Grove Formation Highland basins.

Santa Rosa Plain basin: The City of Sebastopol requested that the basin boundary be extended to include the city and three neighboring mutual water companies. This modification keeps Sebastopol fully in the one basin, instead of being split between Santa Rosa Plain and Wilson Grove Formation Highland basins.

Sonoma Valley basin: The Sonoma Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) requested that the basin boundary match the Napa-Sonoma county line. This modification ensures that properties within Sonoma County will be managed by the Sonoma Valley GSA instead of a Napa GSA - and vice versa.

The next board meeting of the Sonoma Valley GSA will be on March 25, at 4 p.m. in the Valley of the Moon Water District Board Room, 19039 Bay St., Sonoma, discussing aquifer storage and recovery; agricultural recharge; and the 2019-2020 budget.
