Water, warning issues subjects at community meeting

Kenwood Fire Chief Daren Bellach is hosting a public meeting at the Kenwood Fire House on April 29 to air two hot issues that have vexed residents since the disastrous Nun’s Fire of 2017.

Local residents in the Treehaven area, restoring water service where their homes burned to the ground, have expressed frustration in dealing with the privately owned Kenwood Village Water Company, and residents throughout the county have been clamoring for a better disaster alert system.

Both issues will be discussed at the 6:30 p.m. meeting, Chief Bellach said.

First District Supervisor Susan Gorin will be on hand, along with Jim Downey, owner of Kenwood Village Water Company.

Treehaven residents have expressed doubts about their water service after the company’s water pumps shorted out right after the fires spread to their homes on Oct. 8, 2017. They are also unhappy with rates and other costs for restoring water services as they are rebuilding.

The company’s principal sources of water are two wells and whatever is stored in a nearby large water tank. The company also has the right to draw on Sonoma County Water Agency water as a back up.

On the night of the fire, Kenwood firefighters were unable to access the property where a switch would have diverted water from the county main water pipe that runs through Kenwood all the the way to the City of Sonoma.

Bellach said that he will outline the agreements reached with the water company and procedures now in place to avoid such problems in the future.

Meanwhile, people all over the county, including many in Sonoma Valley, have called for a better disaster warning system. Local residents have urged adoption of some sort of siren warning, similar to the current fire siren that summons volunteers to incidents.

Residents will have a chance to discuss these matters at the meeting.

The firehouse is located at 9045 Sonoma Hwy.
