Oakmont honors its premier volunteers

Oakmont honored three of its premier volunteers – Elke Strunka, Sue Hattendorf, and George McKinney – at its 53rd annual meeting April 1.

Oakmont Village Association (OVA) Board president Steve Spanier described them as “part of Oakmont’s uniqueness” and said the association dues “could easily be two or three times as high” without its many volunteer committees.

Strunka, who was just re-elected treasurer of the board, received the Susan C. Millar Commemorative Community Service Award, named for the late Susan Millar, a long-time volunteer. Director Tom Kendrick said OVA is indebted to Strunka for her many amazing contributions to the association.

Hattendorf and McKinney were recognized with the Community Service Volunteer-of -the-Year award.

McKinney was thanked by Director Al Medeiros for helping “make Oakmont a better place” with his efforts on behalf of the Lifelong Learning program, Sunday Symposium, technology forums and service on various committees and subcommittees.

Hattendorf was honored for her work in connection with Citizens Organized to Prepare for Emergencies (COPE), which she began putting together in 2004 after dealing with the aftermath of an earthquake before moving to Oakmont. She also has offered free tax service to Oakmont residents for 19 years, organized the Sonoma County Homeowners and Renters Association Programs and is on the board of the regional food program FISH (Friends in Service Here).

Spanier also thanked Kevin Hubred, association general manager, and his staff, calling them “the glue that holds our community together.”
