Kiwanis raising funds for student scholarships

By Jeff Davis

Every Kiwanis Club around the world acts on its conviction to help children and their communities succeed, no matter what economic and social conditions may hold them back. What isn’t stated explicitly in mottos and goals is the pleasure that results not only from helping children and interacting with them, but also from working side by side with them to help them accomplish their goals, particularly involving their own sense of needing to serve their communities.

A perfect example locally is the Montgomery High School Key Club, sponsored and mentored by Oakmont’s Kiwanis Club. Through the years, this group has grown in size, in its excitement to complete service projects, and in its enthusiasm in everything they do. Whether members are packing food at the Redwood Empire Food Bank, cleaning debris out of creeks and beaches, working at the Humane Society, handing out summer lunches for children at the Sonoma County Library, or planting seedlings to restore our environment, these youth are fired with enthusiasm and commitment. They have been winning major awards locally, regionally and internationally for their commitment and originality. The best part is that in many of the projects they have originated, we Oakmont Kiwanis members get to work alongside the Key Club members and share in the excitement and feeling of accomplishment. We appreciate them and they appreciate us.

These students come from all walks of life; many are faced with economic and family hardships. To help these youngsters make gains through further education beyond high school, the Oakmont Kiwanis Club has developed a program of scholarships that we award selected graduating Key Club seniors from Montgomery and Maria Carrillo High Schools. These scholarships recognize both academic achievement and dedication to community service; they represent potential personal success and future involvement in solving the needs of their communities.

We are asking our neighbors to help us help these students as they head into a community college program or complete a college/university degree. Typical awards so far have amounted to $2,000 to $3,000 each and we find more students who would benefit from this boost every year. We invite you to donate whatever amount you find possible. Checks should be made out to the Kiwanis Club of Oakmont Foundation and will qualify as a tax-exempt contribution. (IRS Tax ID #27-3081078) Mail contributions to P.O. Box 862, Kenwood, CA 95452.

We also invite you to participate in our efforts. To find out more about Oakmont Kiwanis, go to our website at OakmontKiwanis.org.
