OVA member vote on 2020 dues increase – Vote YES

Dear Editor,

At this writing it is most probable that a vote of the OVA membership will be required to approve the 2020 OVA budget. The vote to approve the dues increase includes, but is not limited to, the purchase of the 225 acres of the Oakmont Golf Club, including buildings, wells, etc. The OVA Board of Directors has a fiduciary duty to do what is in the best interest of the entire community. The board has completed its due diligence with an in-depth analysis of the complex details of the issue. A “yes” vote is now needed in order to gain and maintain control of the OGC property by OVA. I believe this OVA Board of Directors has earned the trust of the Oakmont community, and I encourage a “yes” vote to support its efforts.

Thirty years ago, a vote was taken by the Oakmont community to determine whether or not to purchase the then Berger-owned golf property and assets, now known as the Oakmont Golf Club, Inc. The measure failed by a small margin. The opportunity for the Oakmont community to own this property presents itself again. However, the stakes are considerably higher today. The investment homeowners have made over those 30 years has multiplied, in many cases, more than fourfold. Those that have purchased homes more recently have an even greater financial investment in their homes. If the OGC property is purchased by a potential developer and not maintained, imagine what a sight would lay itself before every person driving through Oakmont village. In order to clean up such a sight, if not blight, Oakmont residents would be held hostage to a developer who would be in a position to “negotiate” the development of the land in exchange for maintaining the remaining open space. This scenario is being played out locally at the former Wikiup Golf Course, where the construction of 98 new homes is proposed, and at the Adobe Creek Golf Course, where a new nine-hole golf course and additional single-family homes on the former golf course land are likewise proposed.

It has been publically stated that Santa Rosa City planners have attempted to downplay OVA members’ concerns regarding the future development of the golf course property. Keep in mind: city planners recommend, but politicians decide. The only way to ensure the protection of our home values and Oakmont’s scenic open space is for the OGC property to be under the control of the OVA.

By the time this letter is posted, OVA members will most likely have a ballot before them detailing the OVA Board’s proposed purchase of the OGC property and assets. Seldom is there a second chance to rectify a prior decision. That do-over now presents itself to Oakmont members. Let’s not let this opportunity slip through our hands again. Let’s take our mulligan and protect our home values and scenic treasure.

Nick Beltrano
