County to test NOAA weather radios for emergency alert use

Sonoma County’s Department of Emergency Management will be testing the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system simultaneously with SoCoAlert and the National Weather Service NOAA Weather Radio System on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. until 11:10 a.m. Most landlines and residents located within the communities of Healdsburg, Cloverdale, and Geyersville with subscriptions to SoCoAlert will receive a phone call or alert on their cell phone.

Anyone with a NOAA weather radio tuned to 162.475 Mhz (the frequency of the Sonoma Mountain station) should receive an alert that morning. NOAA radios can be purchased at many retail outlets such as electronics, department, sporting goods, and boat and marine accessory stores, and online for about $30 to $50.

In the event of a real emergency, these systems can be activated to provide emergency instructions to residents and visitors.

No action will be required. However, the County of Sonoma is asking residents of Cloverdale, Geyserville and Healdsburg, those receiving the WEA or SoCoAlert, and listeners of NOAA radio system to respond to a survey so they can learn more about who received alerts, their cell phone providers, where they were located at the time, etc.

A link to the survey, available in English and Spanish, will be posted on SoCoEmergency.org just prior to the test on Sept. 5.

For more information about the Emergency Alert exercise, go to SoCoEmergency.org or contact Community Alert and Warning Program Manager Tim Romero at 565-1152 or email tim.romero@Sonoma.County.org.
