Free food available for those in need

The Redwood Empire Food Bank supplies a number of food distribution locations in Sonoma Valley, and volunteers want to get the word out that food is available. Locally, there is a Tuesday evening distribution at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Kenwood (5-6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of the month), and a Friday morning distribution at Jack London Village in Glen Ellen (9-10 a.m. on the first and third Friday of the month.)

While the Glen Ellen location usually distributes all its food, sometimes the Kenwood location does not. Even though the food does not go to waste, as it’s sent to the other distribution points, the volunteers believe there is more need in the Kenwood area and would like to see more people come by and pick up food.

Eleanor Albon, who organizes the St. Patrick’s volunteers, said, “We’re wanting to ‘spread the word’ wherever we can. We regularly ask people to tell their friends as they pick up food. It was so hard last Tuesday to return about 40 percent of the food REFB brought. Granted, it won’t be wasted, but it also won’t go to those in need in the Kenwood area.”

If you are in need, or know of someone who is, help is available. To receive food, you are asked to self-verify that you are within the income guidelines, but you do not need to show any proof of income or identification. To find out what the income guidelines are, go to refb.org/our-work/programs/get-food/ and click on the income guidelines. You can also see all the Sonoma Valley distribution locations at the same link. Bring your own grocery bags or boxes to the food pickups.
