Urban planners chosen to create SDC Specific Plan
The latest news from Permit Sonoma is that Oakland-based Dyett & Bhatia, Urban and Regional Planners, has been given the nod to lead the development of a Specific Plan for Sonoma Developmental Center (SDC) over the next two and a half years. The plan will specifically outline the future disposition of the SDC’s 945 acres of open space and campus buildings.
The $2.3 million contract is being funded by the State of California’s Department of General Services that has responsibility for disposing of the now-surplus property. Because it has administered the property for 50 years, the state Department of Developmental Services agreed to continue administering payroll and human resources for the entire site, including police, fire and maintenance staff.
Dyett & Bhatia (D&B) have extensive history with developing both general and specific plans, similar to county and city general plans, but focused on single issues.
According to the company’s website, dyettandbhatia.com, they have prepared over 60 general plans for California cities and counties over the past 25 years, and have extensive “expertise in a wide variety of engagement techniques including large-format community workshops and open houses, stakeholder and focus group outreach, community surveys, multi-lingual outreach, social media engagement, and website design and management.”
While the contract between the county and D&B was due to be finalized at the Oct. 22 Board of Supervisors, it was put off because of the Kincade Fire. A new signing date has not been announced as of press time.
