Kenwood Depot celebrates 40 years as Historic Landmark

By Jay Gamel, KCC board member

On Nov. 9, 1979, the Kenwood Depot became Sonoma County’s 46th Historic Landmark, thanks to the efforts of the Kenwood Improvement Club and the county Landmarks Commission. That designation not only recognized the building’s importance as a link in developing the Sonoma Valley after the depot opened in 1888, but has been crucial in obtaining financial support – support that has kept it a well-maintained and vital community asset.

Nothing illustrates the community nature of the depot more than the Annual Holiday Potluck party, taking place on Saturday, Dec. 7, this year. It’s an important date for Americans everywhere, remembering the attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the country into WWII, but now a day of hope and celebration of community as we draw together to share good food and good company, and toast our future.

Anyone who attended last year’s feast will tell you that it was a comfortable and cozy evening of friends, food and wonderful holiday music provided by the Maria Carrillo High School Jazz Choir. This internationally acclaimed choral group has performed before more than 100,000 people at the Fire Festival in South Korea, at both Jeju and Seoul, and we are delighted to have them back again.

This year, we are celebrating not only our beautiful community, but also surviving the recent Kincade Fire without any losses on a local level. We also celebrate the many small triumphs and family events that have taken place here over the decades. This year has seen weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, baby showers, dance lessons, yoga, meditation, community meetings, public safety meetings, county meetings, and corporate gatherings, along with dinners, luncheons and more. There was even a second-generation wedding at the depot this month – a daughter getting married in the same place where her parent’s held their wedding reception.

So come and break bread with your neighbors, meet old friends and make new ones, on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m. at Kenwood’s most famous landmark. Click here for instructions on what to bring.
