Special delivery to Kenwood School

water tank bein lifted by crane
On Friday, Nov. 8, Kenwood School received a very large package – two water tanks that will hold 7,000 gallons each.

As you can imagine, it was a rather tricky maneuver to take those tanks up and over power lines before placing them on pads.

The tanks were not added as a response to the 2017 fires, but as a code requirement for the school’s Cougar Club after-school care building replacement project that took place this past summer.

California’s Division of the State Architect (DSA) regulates school building codes, and issues permits to do construction. DSA now requires schools to have a fire hydrant that flows water at a high rate. The existing hydrant near the school does not flow at even half of the required rate, so the school needed to take DSA’s other option of creating some sort of dedicated on-site water storage for fire suppression.

The tanks were manufactured to DSA’s specifications by a company located in the Central Valley.

The tanks will be filled from the school’s irrigation well, and the water may not be used for anything other than emergency fire fighting through a hydrant located next to the tanks. It will be at Kenwood Fire’s discretion when, how and if to use the water, either for the school or the neighborhood.
