The Snark, love, winter hiking – it’s all at Jack London

Jack London State Historic Park offers a number of events this month, so mark your calendar.

The cruise of The Snark – Part 1

For Jack London, living and owning land near Glen Ellen was a way of escaping Oakland, from the city way of life he called “the man trap.” But, restless and eager for foreign travel and adventure, he and his wife Charmian decided to build a ship, the Snark, and go sailing around the world, serializing his adventure.

A presentation on their epic south seas adventure on Feb. 9, 2:30-4:30 p.m., will include a series of readings from selected passages written by Jack London “The Cruise of the Snark” (1911), Charmian London “The Log of the Snark” (1915), and fellow adventurer Martin Johnson “Through the South Seas With Jack London” (1913). An absolutely amazing trip from beginning to end.

Readings will be enhanced by photographs taken on the voyage, and artifacts displayed in the museum.

Part 1 will look at the London vision, building and launching the Snark, plus the trials and tribulations of getting to their first stop in Hawaii. Dates for future readings in 2020 are not set at this time. Meet at the House of Happy Walls Museum.

Cost is $20, which includes parking. Go to www.jacklondonpark.com.

Valentine piano concert

The Jack London Piano Club offers a post-Valentine’s Day concert for everyone on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2-4 p.m.

Arrive early to see the newly redesigned House of Happy Walls Museum or take a free docent tour, then transcend the everyday with an afternoon of listening to your piano favorites played on Charmian London’s 1901 Steinway piano.

Refreshments will be served at the intermission.

Since 2011 the Piano Club has presented quarterly concerts, raising over $18,000 to benefit operations at the Park.

Admission is $20, which includes the parking fee. Space is limited, so get your tickets today at www.jacklondonpark.com.

Winter hike in the woods

Get outdoors on Sunday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-noon, and experience the wonders of nature in winter, exploring the woods and openings of Jack London State Historic Park.

Retired biologist Kate Symonds will lead you on a discovery hike where you tune your senses to the natural world, and explore answers to questions that nature evokes, while cultivating a greater sense of wonder of nature around us. Pay special attention to the diversity of plant life and also look for signs of wildlife. Walks are generally slow-paced and range from 1.5 to 4 miles on gently-to-moderately undulating terrain. Be prepared for inclement weather as walks go rain or shine. Families welcome.

Meet Symonds in the museum parking lot on the left as you enter the park. Admission is free, but parking fee applies. Limited to 10 participants. Register online at www.jacklondonpark.com.
