Quarryhill’s magnificent magnolias

Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen is holding “Magnificent Magnolias Walks” every Wednesday afternoon in March, starting at 1 p.m.

Magnolias are an ancient lineage of flowering plants that date back to the Eocene, some 54 million years ago. As some of the first trees to flower each year, they herald the approach of spring.

Some of the rarest and most beloved magnolias from eastern Asia are present within Quarryhill’s internationally recognized collection. Come learn about them while experiencing the garden in early spring.

Free to Quarryhill Members. Free with the price of garden admission. Please pre-register by contacting

On March 21, 10 a.m.-noon, horticulturist Kathleen Aspens will lead “Essence of the Garden,” a nature walk to experience the beauty, fragrance and splendor of the garden and its vast collection of plants from China and Japan. The walk has been carefully scheduled during the flowering season so participants can experience rare wild plants in full bloom. Aspens will weave a rich tapestry of history, lore, botanical knowledge, and the healing gifts of the flowers as you stroll.

Docent training at Quarryhill

Quarryhill is looking for people who want to learn more about plants and then share that knowledge with others. A background in botany or horticulture is not required – just a passion for gardening and a desire to enrich the public’s experience at Quarryhill.

Training is on six Wednesdays from March 6-April 8, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Interested? Call Neely Hart at 996-6027, or email
