World Health Organization reports mysterious pneumonia sickening many in Wuhan, China.

Jan. 20

First U.S. case reported in Washington state.

Jan. 26

The federal Centers for Disease Control confirms first case in California, in Orange County.

Jan. 30

World Health Organization declares global public-health emergency.

Mar. 2

Sonoma County health officials confirm first case in county, a resident with recent international travel.

Sonoma County declares a county public health emergency.

Mar. 4

California’s Governor Newsom declares a state emergency.


President Trump declares national emergency.

Mar. 14

Sonoma County officials announce first confirmed case of community spread of COVID-19.

Mar. 15

County health and school officials recommend school districts suspend in-person classes. Later in March, the Sonoma County Office of Education recommended this continue through at least May 1.

Mar. 17

County issues shelter in place order to last until at least April 7. It may be extended.

Mar. 20

First death reported in Sonoma County.

Mar. 23

Sonoma County’s Public Health Officer orders closing of all parks in Sonoma County – local, county, state and federal.

Mar. 29

Total Sonoma county positive cases: 58; deaths: one.

Total California positive cases: 6,319;

deaths: 133

Total U.S. positive cases: 139,675;

deaths: 2,436
