Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotary receives $10,000 matching grant

The Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotary Foundation has received a $10,000 matching grant and is asking the public for donations to be used for COVID-19 relief locally. Club member Jimmy Galvin and his wife Colleen have pledged $5,000, along with two other club members who have pledged an additional $5,000, and they will match all donations dollar for dollar, up to $10,000.

In a fundraising appeal, incoming club president Kyle Fisher explained that they hope to end up with at least $20,000 to go to two areas where the need is most dire right now - food and rent.

They have identified three organizations that will receive the funds - FISH (Friends in Sonoma Helping), SOS (Sonoma Overnight Support), and the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

FISH is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1971 that helps with food assistance, transportation to medical appointments, medical equipment and more. They are currently helping people with rent and utilities. Clients are screened and payments are made directly to the utility or landlord.

SOS provides shelter and meals for homeless individuals and families in Sonoma Valley, and the Rotary Club of Glen Ellen-Kenwood has worked with them for the past five years. The club recently bought SOS a commercial dishwasher to meet sanitation requirements. SOS has seen a huge increase in people needing help since this pandemic began. At present they are serving around 100 meals a day. Some food is prepared at SOS, and more is purchased from struggling local restaurants.

The Redwood Empire Food Bank is the most efficient food acquisition and distribution center in the county. It is able to purchase four dollars worth of food for every one dollar donated.
