PG&E powering up...

About 15 large generators are parked at the PG&E substation on Henno Road in Glen Ellen in preparation for possible shutoffs by the utility, outages similar to the numerous Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) that occurred last year when fire risk was high. According to PG&E’s media representative Deanna Contreras, the generators are part of PG&E’s microgrid strategy. PG&E received approval to prepare just over 60 substations across 19 counties to safely be able to quickly and efficiently interconnect generation during a PSPS. Six of those substations are in Sonoma County: Bodega Bay, Cloverdale, Forestville, Healdsburg, Sebastopol and Windsor. PG&E intends to have all substations prepared for the rapid interconnection of temporary generation by Sept. 1. “The generators at PG&E’s Dunbar substation in Glen Ellen are currently located there due to land availability at the substation for backup power support,” said Contreras. “The generators will be deployed as needed to support local communities and minimize the customer impacts of future PSPS events.”Photo by Alec Peters
