West Coast bike trip stops for news

One look at Jack Brown’s heavily laden touring bicycle and you know that this man has been on the road for a while. The 18-year-old New Hampshire resident is cycling from Vancouver to San Diego in a trip of a lifetime. He’s taking a year off to get the travel bug out of his system before starting Dartmouth next year. Brown had stopped at the Kenwood Market for a quick lunch before heading to San Francisco. He was enjoying the warmer inland climate after following the coast down from Oregon, which has been cool and very foggy this month.

“It’s a good change of scenery, too,” he added, noting that the wine country at harvest is an incredible sight. He’s been staying in youth hostels when available and local parks otherwise. He spent the previous night at the home of a fellow cyclist he met on the road in Santa Rosa who invited him for dinner and to stay the night. “People have been really nice on this trip.”

Brown flew to Vancouver and started his trip on Sept. 9; he expects to be in San Diego on or about Oct. 20.
