Fundraiser for local woman with breast cancer
Susan Hackett moved to Kenwood five months ago to rest and recuperate after a bout with breast cancer in 2012, cancer that she had hoped was in remission. But what looked like a clean recovery was not. The cancer metastasized at the same location and a new spot has appeared on her lung in early July.
A native of Southern California, she moved north to attend high school in Menlo Park, and lived in Atherton and San Francisco before discovering Kenwood. As a school teacher, her financial options have been limited.
“I totally know I’m going to be OK,” Susan said, “I just have to figure out how to do this.”
Continuing chemotherapy offers a bleak outlook. “They only offer about a 25 to 30 percent success rate and even then, I’d have to continue with it once every three weeks for the rest of my life. At the end of the day, I don’t know if it will help. The drugs they want to use have side effects on my liver and immune system, with nausea and fatigue.”
Instead, Susan has opted for a holistic approach to recovery which will involve treatments offered in Arizona, or possibly Mexico or Costa Rica, at the Sunridge Medical Center’s alternative treatment centers.
Friends are sponsoring a fundraiser to help Susan defray the very expensive treatments. The event takes place at Muscardini Cellars Tasting Room on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be live music with local band The WildKats, food and wine, a silent auction, and raffle prizes. Suggested donation is $20, and Michael Muscardini is offering 20 percent of all the wine sales to the fund for Susan. All proceeds will benefit her treatment and care.
Muscardini Cellars Tasting Room is located at 9380 Sonoma Hwy. in Kenwood. For more information about Susan and her treatment go to igg.me/at/LovingLifeFund.
