Daniel Louis Delaney

Daniel Louis Delaney
Dan Delaney passed away peacefully at home, with family at his side, on Aug. 2, 2013, after a long conflict with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Los Angeles, Dan went to school in East L.A., Oakland, Oregon and Whittier, graduating from Whittier High School in 1957. His excellence in football led to a full scholarship at Whittier College playing for coach Don Coryell. He left college to start a family, moved to Carlsbad and began his career in the grocery store business. In the late 60s, he returned to college, subsequently graduating from Long Beach State with a major in Economics, a minor in Economic History and earning a lifetime California teaching credential. Dan’s self-determination and drive led to his success in a variety of professional careers, including grocery store manager (AlphaBeta), stock broker (Dean Whitter), teacher at both the high school and community college levels (Tahoe Truckee Unified School District / Sierra College), restaurant owner (Pizza Peddler / Upper Crust Pizza), and lastly Real Estate broker (Golden West / Prudential / Coldwell Banker). Dan’s direct approach and honesty helped make him a significant force within the real estate market in the Truckee-Tahoe area for the years he was there.

Growing up as a Southern California kid, Dan loved all things outdoors, especially sports. Throughout his life he was physically active, enjoyed playing football, rugby, racquet ball, tennis, riding motorcycle enduro races, downhill skiing, water skiing, boating, hunting, mountain bike riding and golf. He was an avid reader, loved to travel, was enthusiastic about learning and embraced experiencing new things. He was described by friends as a mentor, a brother, generous, gregarious, always willing to lend a hand, a bigger than life guy, and with a presence that was felt immediately wherever he was.

His hobby of making wine that began when he lived at Tahoe became a passion when he moved to Warm Springs Road in the Sonoma Valley and then retired in 2002. In addition to growing grapes for home winemaking, he began farming Cabernet grapes that produced gold medal wines on a commercial level. He loved to entertain and it wasn’t unusual for a spontaneous dinner party or BBQ to spring up at the house, or for tourists or neighbors to be invited in for an impromptu barrel tasting.

He is survived, and will be greatly missed, by his cherished wife of 27 years, Elspeth; his daughter Debra (Don) Boring, his son Douglas (Heidi) Delaney, his grandson Dane Casterson and granddaughter Marina Casterson; his brother Gary (Karen) Delaney, his stepbrother Barry (Rhea) Sullivan; and his nephews Mark (Tracey) Delaney and Dale Delaney and their children.

There are no services planned, but Dan’s wishes were “Toast me with a glass of good Scotch when I’m gone.”

And to that end, here is part of the old Irish blessing – “May you be in heaven for half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.”
