Deal in the works for sale of Kenwood Restaurant

If all goes according to plan, by mid-September the iconic Kenwood Restaurant will change hands. When the deal closes, the new owner will be Bill Foss, who is a co-owner of the very successful and popular Fish Restaurant in Sausalito.

Foss said he is buying the restaurant property as well as an acre of the surrounding vineyard, and will keep the Kenwood Restaurant name. Foss and Fish Restaurant have gained a reputation over the last decade for focusing on sustainable seafood and being involved in a number of environmental causes involving the ocean and its fish population.

Foss said that his food at Kenwood Restaurant will have an über commitment to serving meals sourced from all corners of Sonoma County.

“I've never seen a better place to have raw ingredients,” said Foss. “You can't find better products anywhere.”

The transfer of ownership would be the end of a 26-year run by Max and Susan Schacher. Chef Max has been serving up Wine Country fare for locals and visitors alike, making the Kenwood Restaurant a well established and well frequented eatery right off Sonoma Hwy. Over the years, Schacher has become one of the better known chefs in the area. Foss said he hopes Schacher will stick around for some time after the change in ownership.

Foss, who in another life was one of the founders of Netscape Communications, said he hasn't developed a specific menu yet, but said that, “When you read it, you should get hungry.” Foss is also part of the Canneti Roadhouse Italiana in Forestville.

Upcoming wine auction at Chateau St. Jean

This year's Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction will again be at Chateau St. Jean in Kenwood on Sunday, Sept. 1. The auction is the heart of Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, when the wine community comes together to support Sonoma County charities. The weekend is full of events, including winemaker dinners, the Taste of Sonoma at MacMurray Ranch, Sonoma Starlight at Francis Ford Coppola Winery, winery barbecues, and the culminating event on Sunday, the Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction at Chateau St. Jean from 12:30 to 7 p.m.

Your auction ticket not only offers you passage into the Wine Spectator Auction Tent, but it also allows you to mingle with Sonoma winemakers, as each table will be presided over by a local winemaker or grower who will share not only their finest wines, but great stories as well. This event offers the bidder a selection of rare, world-class experiences and wines, and an opportunity to join their neighbors in the community in supporting charities that will build a better future throughout Sonoma County.

Sonoma Wine Country Weekend is produced by the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance and the Sonoma County Vintners.
