Moscow Ballet's Nutcracker

Perhaps the most famous ballet of all time, The Nutcracker has entertained millions of people for more than a century, particularly during the Christmas season. The iconic Christmas tradition will be performed by the Moscow Ballet at the Wells Fargo Center on Dec. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $27.50 to $102.

The world of Scrooge

Scrooge is a stage musical based on the 1970's film adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic transformative tale A Christmas Carol. It will be playing at the Spreckels Performing Arts Center on weekends through Dec. 22. Tickets range from $22 to $26.

Portuguese cooking class

Manuel Azevedo, head chef of the Sonoma restaurant LaSalette, will be hosting a Portuguese cooking lesson at Ramekins on Dec. 19. The class will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and will feature delicious Portuguese culinary staples. $95 per person.

Sing-Along Messiah

The 33rd annual Redwood Empire Sing-Along Messiah is coming to the Spreckels Performing Arts Center on Dec. 21. An on-stage chorus and orchestra will assist the audience in singing such classics as the “Hallelujah Chorus.” The sing-along begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets cost $20.

Design exhibit at the SVMA

Starting on Dec. 21 and ending Mar. 2, Aidlin Darling Design, an award-winning San Francisco-based design firm, will be displaying a site-specific, multi-sensory exhibit which will span all of the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art's 5,000 square feet. Admission to the museum is $5.

Museum on the Go

On Dec. 21, the Sonoma Valley Library will host the Children's Museum of Sonoma County's “Museum on the Go.” From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., you and your young ones can investigate the mobile museum's fun, hands-on exhibits with topics ranging from magnetism to hydrodynamics.

Family nature walk

Sonoma County Regional Parks is sponsoring a family nature walk on Dec. 21, 1-4 p.m. Get the kids outside and let them explore Spring Lake Regional Park with a naturalist from the Environmental Discovery Center. One-hour hikes start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Meet at the Discovery Center at the park's Violetti Road entrance.

T-shirt design for teens

On Dec. 27, The Teen Leadership Council will be holding a free create-your-own-t-shirt event at the Sonoma Valley Library. Bring a dark t-shirt to the library at 2 p.m. and use bleach, stencils, and original cut-outs to make a unique and creative shirt. At 3 p.m. there will be a meeting to share ideas about future programs for Sonoma Valley teens.

Aging isn't for sissies

Explore the challenges of aging at an “Aging with Humor and Dignity” support group on Saturday, Dec. 28, 3-5 p.m. at the Sonoma Shambhala Meditation Center in Sonoma. Through open discussion as well as videos and reading, participants will view this time of life through the wisdom of Shambhala Buddhist teachings. The group meets on the 4th Saturday of each month. Drop-ins welcome. Free.

Coffeehouse open mic

Authors Tabez Churchill and Linda Jay Geldens are the featured readers at this month's edition of the Redwood Writers' Open Mic Readings on Dec. 28. The two well-known authors will be at SoCo Coffee in Santa Rosa for the first half of the free reading, which goes from 2-4 p.m. The second half of the reading will be open on a first come, first serve manner to anyone who has writing to share.

Folk legend performs in Sonoma

Combining folk-rock with tales of the great characters and events of history, Al Stewart was on the forefront of the folk revival of the late 60s and 70s. On Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m., Stewart will be at the Sonoma Community Center to share his unique brand of songwriting. Tickets range from $20 to $28.

Healing exhibit

Sara Bell, a Rohnert Park artist and teacher, will unveil her new exhibit at the Eggen and Lance Chapel starting on Dec. 10. Titled “Simple Healing,” the mixed media show focuses on the beauty of the natural world as a healing agent. The show will run through Feb 28. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

New Year's Eve Ballroom Bash

Bring your favorite dish to Monroe Hall in Santa Rosa for California Ballroom Dancing's New Year's Eve Dance & Potluck Dinner from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Throughout the night, you can take dancing lessons in styles such as Ballroom, Salsa, West Coast Swing, and more. Attention olive lovers!

Want to learn how to de-bitter olives? Then don't miss a class with expert Don Landis on Jan. 5, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Cline Cellars in Sonoma. Landis will talk about the history of the olive, the history of the olive in California, and give a thorough description of how to de-bitter the olive to make it edible without lye. Discussion of the many varieties of olives, when to pick and other important tips will be covered. Event is free. RSVP required.
