New group focuses on Latino library use
Los Amigos de la Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma (Friends of the Library of Sonoma County) is a new nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing library patronage by the Latino community.
Los Amigos is a sponsored program of the Sonoma Public Library Foundation, a nonprofit tax exempt organization. The mission of Los Amigos is “to provide a bridge for our unique Latino community to discover the benefits, resources and joys of becoming patrons of the Sonoma County Libraries”.
Interested and committed community members volunteer to do the work of Los Amigos, assisted by technical advisers from the various libraries. No one is paid; the work is done for free in the spirit and mission of Los Amigos. The Board meets monthly at the main library in Santa Rosa.
Los Amigos is actively recruiting candidates for positions on its Board of Directors, as well as others who have skills, talents and interests in becoming involved.
Projects are now in the planning stage and will require volunteer participation. Look for Los Amigos to be part of the Day of the Dead celebrations in Petaluma and Sonoma.
The first annual meeting of Los Amigos was held on Sept. 9 at the Santa Rosa Main Library on E Street. Los Amigos’ first community project was approved and will get underway at the Petaluma and Sonoma library branches in conjunction with El Dia de Los Muertos, Day of the Dead. “Operation Get A Library Card” will have a presence at these well-attended cultural celebrations. Bilingual volunteers will be on hand to assist potential patrons in signing up for a library card.
