Clarification from Jim Shere:
I need to correct something I said in my last column [Living Life Well, Oct. 15] – and to apologize for having lapsed into a stupid generalization disrespectful of those who have been truly damaged – when I wrote “the way we feel damaged by our experiences is simply our negative opinion of the way we are changed by our experiences.”
It’s never that simple, of course, yet those who know me know I am sometimes prone to make such sweeping pronouncements. Many of them are harmless enough, but this one blamed true victims for simply believing they are damaged. It doesn’t take much to recognize there is real damage in the world, and that no amount of ornamentation can disguise it.
