Volunteers needed at Sonoma Garden Park

Do you have a green thumb? Have you always been interested in plants and want to learn more? Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) is seeking volunteers for nursery workdays at Sonoma Garden Park on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nursery workdays are a wonderful way to spend a Thursday and get hands-on experience with the inner workings of an active nursery.

The nursery, with the capacity to grow 40,000 plants, provides native plants for numerous restoration projects in and around the Valley, while also providing the vegetable starts for crops at Sonoma Garden Park. In a recent collaboration with local professionals, volunteers, and community members, SEC is creating sustainable landscape solutions at the Sonoma Garden Park with the installation of two new rain catchment tanks and landscaping the entrance of the park with water-wise native plants, many of which were grown in the native plant nursery.

All ages and skill levels are welcome to volunteer. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will be getting dirty, so please dress appropriately. Wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves, a snack, and a refillable water bottle.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. in front of the straw bale barn next to the parking lot. Sonoma Garden Park is located at 19996 Seventh St. East between Denmark and East MacArthur streets. For more information, contact Mike Zigler at 996-0712, ext. 102 or mike@sonomaecologycenter.org.
