Farmers market returning to Plaza Park

Customers shop the Kenwood Farmers market during its inaugural season in 2014.
According to county parks officials, the farmers market that made its debut last year in Plaza Park in Kenwood has been given the OK to return.

Last year’s use permit approval for Agricultural Community Events to run a Sunday market during the summer was considered a pilot event, to be reviewed at the end of the season. Some neighbors had worried about the potential effects of the market on parking, noise, garbage and pedestrian safety.

Bert Whitaker, parks operation manger at the Sonoma County Regional Parks Department, wrote in an email that his department did some outreach to the community in the Fall and that the general comments indicated that the Farmers Market did not cause any significant neighborhood or parking impacts.

Whitaker wrote that the parks department plans to renew the use permit with, “essentially the same requirements as last year.”

Last year’s requirements placed on the market included having an on-site manager, no vendors arriving earlier than 11 a.m. for setup (the market runs from noon to 4 p.m.), and that vendors must park off site during the market. In addition, acoustic music is allowed, but not amplified music.

The farmers market is currently scheduled to begin June 7 and run every Sunday through Sept. 13.
