County looks into dog area for Shaw Park
Sonoma County Regional Parks officials are asking neighbors of Shaw Park and the Kenwood community for input regarding possibly allowing dogs off leash.
Off leash dog areas are sites that have a shared use with other recreational activities, as opposed to a dog park, which is exclusively for dog use.
Off leash dog areas commonly include posted hours when dogs are permitted off leash, clear boundaries that may or may not be fenced, compatibility with other park uses, and posted rules and regulations.
A community meeting is scheduled to discuss the issues surrounding dog use at Shaw Park on Monday, Aug. 10, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Shaw Park picnic area.
Parks officials say they have received numerous requests from residents to consider some use of Shaw Park for off leash dogs. Shaw Park is five acres, consisting of a soccer field, picnic area, and playground. For years, the Kenwood Soccer Club used Shaw Park for practices and games during the soccer season, but the club does not use the park anymore, nor does any other organized soccer league.
Regional Parks has put together a survey requesting feedback, which has been mailed to residents living within mile of the park. The surveys will be available at the Aug. 10 meeting as well.
