Village Chat

The weather on Sunday, Oct. 11 was hot and beautiful. Of course it was, since that was the day of the Glen Ellen Village Fair, and it is always hot and beautiful on that second Sunday in October. Fair organizers have a lock on the weather, as well as a rollicking good time. People lined the parade route, all two blocks of it, to watch their fellow Glen Ellenites march by, along with an odd assortment of extraterrestrials drawn here by the theme of the day, Glen Aliens. Afterward, the crowd spent the afternoon milling about, shopping, eating and drinking at the 85+ booths, and listening to the bands on stage in front of the Post Office. Kids played in Kids Alley, ate snow cones and cotton candy, and had their faces painted by PoPo the Clown. If you missed it, mark your calendar for next year, Oct. 9, 2016.

It was fitting for Rose Cardinale to move to Wine Country several years ago, as she and her cousin Nick Buich won the Grape Stomping competition at the Vintage Festival in Sonoma last month. It was a team effort, with Nick stomping the grapes in the barrel, and Rose, the “swabber,” scooping away the skins to allow the juice to flow into their jug. There were about 40 teams competing. Rose and Nick won their heat of six teams, and then won the finals with 4.9 pounds of grape juice. For some reason I can't get the image of Lucy Ricardo stomping grapes out of my head!

On Sept. 19 Kenwood threw a really great party, Kenwood Jazz, Blues & BBQ, featuring four outstanding jazz acts, Karen Lovely, the Stephany Ozer Ensemble and As Tres Mininas, the Roger Glenn Jazz Organ Trio, and Mark Adams and the Muskadine Blues. This was a fundraiser for improvements and preservation of Plaza Park, and netted around $5,000, which is funneled through the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation. Did you know that there is a separate fund at the Foundation specifically for Plaza Park? That's how much we love our park! The event was spearheaded by Don and Amy MacNair. Don designed and helped build the beautiful new gazebo in the park, and he is being honored for his efforts at the Kenwood Education Foundation's Big Heart BBQ Luncheon on Sunday, Nov. 1. Don was also Parade Grand Marshal on the 4th of July, so this really is the Year of Don MacNair, and deservedly so.

Speaking of the Big Heart Luncheon, it's actually a golf tournament and luncheon this year, featuring a nine-hole, four person scramble, which should be a lot of fun. There are only 36 spots for golfers, so sign up ASAP if you want to be in the golf tournament. Everyone can go to the luncheon, though, which will be at the Quail Inn starting at 12:30 p.m. In addition to Don, the Kenwood Fire Department is also being recognized with the Big Heart award, so let's all get out and show them how much we appreciate them! Karen Palimotti and Gordon Friedman in Dubai
Karen Palimotti and Gordon Friedman in Dubai.

Gordon Friedman and Karen Palimotti have been cruising around India and the Far East, and sent a photo from Dubai (at the beginning of their trip). They spent five days on the India coast cities of Mumbai, Mangalore, Goa, and Cochin. Gordon says India is a fascinating country with very smart people, with 90 percent literacy. He was there 10 years ago and noticed many more cars, mopeds, and bicycles this time, but less smog and haze. They visited some beautiful Hindu temples as well as Catholic cathedrals. Gordon reports that there are over two million Indian gods, and 18 basic languages in India with over 200 dialects. After India, Gordon and Karen visited Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Singapore.

Katy and Rudy Biller in Prague
Katy and Rudy Biller in Prague.
Katy and Rudy Biller emailed from Prague as they were traveling around Europe. They also visited Copenhagen, Hamburg, Florence, and Munich. Katy said, “Great weather and such nice people everywhere.” Rudy is from Germany, and Katy lived there for three years when she was younger, so they both speak German fluently. The funny thing is that Katy said waiters would speak to her in German, but when Rudy started to talk, they switched to English!

Pete and Cathy Hardy and Dennis and Micki Sabourin cruised from South Hampton, England, to New York via Norway, the Shetland Islands, Iceland, and Nova Scotia, and sent us a photo from Norway. What a great itinerary; I want to go!

That's all for now. Thanks to everyone for sending in your news and photos for Village Chat. You can do it, too! Just email, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! - AQP
