Edible and incredible

Michael Muscardini of Muscardini Cellars in Kenwood stands next to the winery’s entry in the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Association’s annual gingerbread contest. A number of wineries in the valley are participating and the public gets to vote on which one they like the best (see page 7 for more information). Yes, nearly everything about the hearth next to Muscardini is edible, a creation that took many hours by staffer Serena Alexi. She used gingerbread, royal icing, Rice Krispies, fondant, and other edible confections. Even the “painting” above the hearth is food coloring on gingerbread cookie, with a chocolate fondant frame dusted with edible gold dust. Three generations of Muscardini’s family are represented in edible chocolate bar photos. Muscardini’s dog, Bini, stands watch to make sure no one licks his candy counterpart. Photo by Alec Peters
