VOTMA hosts Kenwood Vineyards for project discussion

On Tuesday, June 28, 7 p.m. at the Kenwood Depot, Kenwood Vineyards will discuss with the community the two major projects they have planned. The first one, which has been approved by the County, is an expansion of their production capability to bring white wine production to Kenwood from Korbel’s facility. The second is a proposed new tasting room facility, accompanied by a request for events, more parking, and amplified outdoor music. This proposed project is presently under review by the County.

The pending application for the new tasting room facility proposes to:

• Cut into the hillside behind the marketing building

• Double existing tasting room size to 5,200+ square feet

• Remove four acres of vines

• Provide 45 new parking spaces for a total of 187 parking spaces for employees and guests

• Increase the number of events from eight per year presently to 22, plus six industry-wide events, some of which would have 500 visitors per day

• Increase anticipated visitors from 25,000 to 50,000

• Have three tasting areas with music on the outdoor terrace, one dedicated to food and wine pairings

• Have an outdoor pizza oven and kitchen for food prep

In 2014 Pernod Ricard purchased Kenwood Vineyards – one of Kenwood’s oldest wineries. The new owners have announced a business plan to go to a higher quality market and have indicated that these changes are part of the operational and marketing plan to accomplish that.

Community members will be able to hear how Kenwood Vineyards proposes to proceed with this project, and how impacts such as traffic and noise will be addressed. If you are interested in hearing more and/or asking questions about the plans, come to the presentation and participate in the discussion on June 28.
