Bernard W. Pola, age 87
Bernard Pola passed away quietly on Dec. 30, 2016. A Kenwood resident, he was born in Santa Rosa General Hospital on Nov. 10, 1929, to Mario and Mary Knepper Pola, and was later joined by his sister, Margaret Pola-Neuer, deceased. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School (Class of 1947), attended the Santa Rosa Junior College and San Jose State College. Bernie taught swimming and diving classes for the Santa Rosa Parks and Recreation Department in the summer months during the early 1950s and 1960s, at pools located in Santa Rosa’s Town and Country neighborhood, the King Street Pool (now Santa Rosa Middle School) where the Santa Rosa Neptune’s began, and the Santa Rosa Swim Center. He was married to Sally Neal Pola for 54 years.
Bernie is survived by his sons Bill (Susan) Pola and Rich Pola, two grandsons Mac and Jayce Pola, one niece Mary Neuer Lee, nephews Paul and Tim Neuer, and grand-nephews Keenan and Aylan Lee, Nicholas Neuer and the late Timothy Neuer. Bernie worked for over 26 years at Sonoma Developmental Center as a Physical Therapy Assistant and Psychiatric Technician. He enjoyed skiing, biking and carving large Moai statues (Easter Island-like) for the backyard.
A “Celebration of Bernie’s Life” will be held this coming summer. Those wishing to remember Bernie may donate to the Santa Rosa High School Foundation (P.O. Box 11006, Santa Rosa, CA, 95406) or a charity of your choice.
