Newlyweds Anne Baker and Andrew Ozkaya with officiant Mike Mullins (center).

A whole lotta Kenwoodians trekked to the nation's capitol to witness the marriage of Umit and Cynthia Ozkaya's son Andrew Ozkaya to Anne Baker on May 20 at the bride's home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Former neighbor Mike Mullins officiated, tying the knot in front of family friends, including Liz Mullins, daughter Kate Mullins Henderson, her son Jake and husband Eric, Steve and Colleen Rose, and Jay Gamel, friend and wedding photographer. Marla Maertins, Andrew's grandmother, was present, and her son Jeff Maertins was Andrew's best man, while sister Lucy Ozkaya was a bridesmaid. The wedding rehearsal was hosted at a country club the night before and the wedding feast was held at home, in a beautiful setting reminiscent of Maryland horse country. Andrew has followed his father's footsteps into food service as a chef, while Anne provides financial advice to investors.

Alisha Meserve at Duke University.

On May 14, Alisha Meserve graduated with a Masters of Health Sciences degree from Duke University School of Medicine, Physician Assistant program. She walked on the 14th with the rest of the school, although her program doesn't actually complete until Aug. 5. Then she will take the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam on Aug. 14 to become licensed as a Physician Assistant. Alisha's dad John Meserve and his girlfriend Denise Paup traveled back to NC, along with other family and friends, for the momentous occasion. John says that Alisha isn't sure where she's headed after that. She has opportunities to stay in North Carolina and work at Duke University Hospital, or she may head back to Boulder, Colorado, where she went to college, and pursue opportunities there. Congratulations, Alisha! Another awesome Kenwood School graduate.

Congratulations also to Gemma Guerrazzi of Glen Ellen, who made the Dean's List for Spring 2017 at Emerson College in Boston. Well done!

Gretchen Sandler (above) and Leah Sandler (below) on top of Mauna Kea on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The Sandler family was on vacation in Hawaii recently, and Leah Sandler sent some photos of her and mom Gretchen at the top of Mauna Kea. (That may be a first for the KP.) The Sandlers stayed in Puako, which is on the Kona side of the Big Island. Leah said, “The beaches are so pretty and fun, but there are also lots of other things to do and see inland. Besides hiking part of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and do some star gazing, we visited the flumes that were once used to transport sugar canes, and went to farmers markets.” Thanks, Leah and Gretchen!

And speaking of photos…it's back! After a several year hiatus, the Kenwood Press Summer Photo Contest, “Pictures with the Press,” is back on. The deadline for submission is Sept. 5, and winners and honorable mentions will be published in the Sept. 15 issue of the KP. So get creative and start snapping. The only requirement is that the Kenwood Press be somewhere in the photo. Exotic locations are not necessary (although we are still hoping for the space shuttle one of these days!) There is actual money at stake, too - $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and third place gets a hearty handshake. Enter early and often. Just email, and put "Photo Contest" in the subject line.

Our next issue will feature high school graduates, so if you have not yet sent in your graduation news, please do so now. Send it to, and be sure to include future plans, whether it be college, work, the military, travel, whatever. We want to know all about it!

And as for the rest of you, send in your news and pictures, too. You can email me, walk in the door, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! - AQP
