Oakmont shows its appreciation

Grateful Oakmont residents packed Berger Center on Nov. 10 to express appreciation to veterans for their service to the country, and to first responders for their extraordinary efforts to protect Oakmont during the wildfires. A rainy, gloomy day couldn’t dim what Oakmont board President Gloria Young called “the beauty and courage” of first responders “putting their lives on the line.” Banners reading “Thank You Veterans,” “Thank You Emergency Responders,” and “A Grateful Oakmont Community” told the story of the day. Above: 2017 Oakmont Grand Marshal Army Air Corps Capt. Earl O’Grady, who flew 180 missions in the Pacific Theater in World War II, addressed the crowd. O’Grady, who was was shot down three times, was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. The event ended with residents contributing $31,000 to the Oakmont Community Foundation, which had already raised $42,000 for wildfire relief. Funds go to the Redwood Credit Union Community Foundation fund, supporting Sonoma County residents. Photo by John Williston.
