East Rec improvements OK’d

Upgrading and repairing Oakmont’s East Recreation Center (ERC) has been given a green light. The OVA board approved ordering construction plans and entering into a “design-build” agreement with a contractor.

The project includes replacement of a rotting second-floor deck with a smaller deck, upgrading the surface around the ERC pool, new pool equipment, new lighting and audio-visual equipment, and changes to make the building and parking lot conform to ADA standards. A two-story addition to the building would house the pool equipment downstairs and provide storage for chairs on the second floor.

The OVA Board voted 6-0 to proceed with the recommendations by Iris Harrell, head of the Construction Oversight Committee. Director Carolyn Bettencourt was absent.

“We can start work in January if we can get a contractor on board,” Harrell told the board on Oct. 31.

Because recovery from the region’s October fires is expected to make it hard to find a contractor, Harrell said ordering construction plans and involving a contractor now in what’s called a “design-build” agreement would improve chances of getting the work done sooner.

The East Rec work is expected to take much of the $1.8 million Oakmont plans to spend on replacement and repair of its facilities in 2018.

The board on Oct. 24 approved a $9-a-month dues increase to fund that and other work on the Central and Berger centers over the next four years. The dues increase is effective in January. A board report said dues are projected to rise in each of the next four years, although in lesser amounts.
