Man killed in Kenwood hit-and-run

A 51-year old San Joaquin County man was struck by a car and killed a little after midnight on Dec. 3 as he was apparently walking on Highway 12, just east of Warm Springs Road.

Earlier that evening, a Kenwood resident had seen the man walking and weaving on Montgomery Drive near the Spring Lake dam, apparently intoxicated. The driver gave the man a ride to the gas station at Melita Road and dropped him off there. It was afterwards that the man was struck and killed in Kenwood, near Kunde Winery.

Kenwood fire personnel responded at 12:10 a.m. but the man was dead at the scene. California Highway Patrol officers found broken glass and windshield wipers, suggesting the vehicle that struck him could have major windshield and front-end damage.

On Monday evening, Dec. 4, another Kenwood resident called with information about a suspect and suspected vehicle. The witness was contacted, and stated that he was familiar with a possible suspect and that this person’s vehicle had some damage to the front end. The witness led officers to the car, a 2001 Lincoln Continental, parked off of Highway 12. Based on the damage to the vehicle, the statements obtained, and other physical evidence collected, officers believe it was the vehicle involved in the collision.

The vehicle was impounded and the owner was interviewed. Investigators have identified a person of interest who, as of Dec. 11, was still being investigated, and no arrest had been made yet.

The dead man was identified as Theodore Richard Erickson, II from Acampo in San Joaquin County.
