Oakmont’s Sunday Symposium meets every Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the Berger Center. A $3 donation is suggested. All Oakmont residents and their guests are welcome. For more information, go to

Feb. 17 – Gaye LeBaron, “Fun Facts About Santa Rosa”

When you think of Santa Rosa history, Luther Burbank is probably the main person who comes to mind. There were others; and almost all that we know about them now is that a street was named after them. Come hear one of our favorite speakers talk about some of the interesting characters who helped shape our city. You may be surprised and even a little shocked!

Gaye LeBaron is a native Californian and a 68-year resident of Sonoma County. She wrote her first column for the Press Democrat in 1959, after several years as a reporter, and was the daily columnist until her retirement in 2001. She continues to contribute a historical perspective column twice monthly. In addition, she is the co-author of a two-volume local history, lectured for 35 years on Sonoma County history in SRJC’s Community Education program, and has taught several courses for Sonoma State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Feb. 24 – Ky Boyd, “Academy Award Movie Review and Predictions”

Come hear the Symposium’s Annual Academy Award Movie Review and Predictions. Ky Boyd, a self-professed movieholic who operates the beloved Rialto Cinemas (and previously the Summerfield Theater), will give his take on the movies and actors nominated for the 2019 Oscars. We’ll even vote ourselves. Formal dress not required!

In addition to the Rialto in Sebastopol, Boyd also operates Rialto Cinemas Elmwood in Berkeley, and Rialto Cinemas Cerrito in El Cerrito.

Movies that have had the most profound impact on Boyd’s life are Diva, All That Jazz, and Walt Disney’s The Aristocats, the first film shown in his kindergarten class. In 2017, Boyd said he would love to have dinner with Martin Sheen and Kate Winslet. This year he would invite Frances McDormand, Jessica Chastain and Judi Dench.
